Defending champ Casey leads European charge in Masters warm up

Paul Casey and Lee Westwood are among the leading European lights hoping to use the Shell Houston Open as a catalyst for a strong performance at the Masters.

The PGA Tour event in Texas is the final tournament ahead of the opening major of the year at Augusta on April 8th, with Casey, in particular, looking to continue the fine form he has already shown in 2010 with his Nike golf clubs.

Returning to defend the title he collected 12 months ago, which was his first career victory on the PGA Tour, Casey has finished in the top ten on the same tour in all four starts this year.

He has admitted that there are still improvements to make, but Casey is delighted with his performances with his Nike One Tour golf balls after injuring a rib mid-way through the season.

The 32-year-old, who also plays with a Nike Victory Red STR8-Fit Tour golf driver and Nike Victory Red Forged TW Blade golf irons, said: "No wins but still very happy with the way I've played. I've been scoring, very, very well.

"The results have been great but there are still certain shots that I'm struggling to hit that normally are in the repertoire and the club is not quite in the position I'd like it to be.

"I wasn't able to hit a draw the last few weeks in Florida which is obviously something which I'm going to need to do this week and I'm going to need to do it next week as well if I want to contend."

Meanwhile, Westwood is looking forward to putting his short game to the test with his golf wedges and golf putter at the Redstone Golf Club.

The world number four remains winless in 2010, but has achieved two top-three finishes on the European Tour.

He added: "I think short game is vital around Augusta. I think putting on these greens being so fast will be a good preparation for next week, too.

"You have got to have a lot of imagination around both of these golf courses. When the greens get that quick you have to factor in the breeze and all sorts of different things.

"On and around the greens is where I've been working most the last couple of days."

Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Mizuno golf irons user Luke Donald are among the other Europeans bringing their golf bags to Florida ahead of the Masters.

Meanwhile, a strong US and international line-up will also be present, including South African Ernie Els, who is looking for a third successive PGA Tour triumph.

World number three Phil Mickelson is another who has opted against having a week off ahead of the Masters, while three-time Shell Houston Open winner Vijay Singh, who plays with Cleveland golf irons, also returns.

Fred Couples is perhaps the most interesting starter, having been on top form on the Champions Tour of late through winning three of the last four events and finishing second in the other.

Newcastle hopeful of naming manager by the weekend

Pardew and Jol are thought to be on the short list
Newcastle have stepped up their search for a full-time boss with the aim of announcing Chris Hughton's successor by the weekend, BBC Sport understands.
Former Southampton boss Alan Pardew is considered a strong candidate, with ex-Tottenham coach Martin Jol also linked after he quit as Ajax coach on Monday.
Hughton led Newcastle into the top flight last season but the club said it wanted someone "with more experience".
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer has said he will not be the next boss.
Shearer, 40, was brought in as caretaker manager in April 2009, but was unable to save the club from relegation to the Championship that season.
"I won't be the next Newcastle manager," he told BBC Radio 5 live. "I can guarantee you that."

The Magpies have installed reserve team coach Peter Beardsley in temporary charge, with former West Ham boss Alan Curbishley and ex-Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill also linked with the job.
BBC Sport understands that Pardew was in talks with Newcastle about taking over at St James' Park as long as 10 days ago.
It is believed Pardew became close friends with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and director Derek Llambias when all three were familiar faces at an exclusive London casino where Llambias was managing director.
Following the dismissal of Hughton, a Newcastle statement said: "The board would like to place on record their thanks to Chris Hughton for his considerable efforts during the club's transition from Championship to Premier League club.
"Chris has shown exceptional character and commitment since being appointed manager in October 2009. The club wishes him well in the future. The task of appointing a new manager now begins."

Chris Hughton has brought dignity, stability and a respectable Premier League placing to Newcastle United - so it should be no surprise that his reward from owner Mike Ashley is the sack
Shearer added that he believes Newcastle's owners have unrealistic expectations of what the club can achieve in the short term.
"I wonder to myself where they think Newcastle should be, if they think they should be higher than mid-table, because I'm not being disrespectful to the squad but they're not going to finish in the top six or seven," said Shearer.
"That is not Newcastle's season. Newcastle's season this year should be all about staying in the Premier League.
"At this moment in time there's no danger of them [being relegated]. For me, Chris was doing a very, very fine job."
