Microsoft announced that it is in collaboration ageement with Cloud.com to provide integration and support to the Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V as part of the OpenStack project. This is an open source cloud-computing platform. By using OpenStack organizations and service providers will be able to run a mix of Microsoft and non-Microsoft infrastructure products with greater flexibility.

Microsoft, as part of its collaborative efforts, will provide architectural and technical guidance to Cloud.com. Meanwhile, for its part, Cloud.com will develop the code to support OpenStack on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V. So when it is complete, the project code will be checked into the public code repository at http://openstack.org.

Virtual machine software has become more important as a production tool over the last few years. A virtual machine is a “computer “inside a computer. With a virtual machine host, you can run multiple virtual machines each with a different operating system. This gets us to Openstack.

The Openstack software can run on an individual server located in a datacenter or run on hardware configured as a modular datacenter. It uses virtualization technology to create and manage large groups of virtual machines. (A modular center is a portable data center where up to 280 servers can be deployed using a shipping container in a regular way to various locations that might not be suitable for a building or some other structure, but then connecting it to the required infrastructure)

By using Microsoft’s virtualization product customers are put in a position to reach economies of scale. They will be able to run Windows- and Linux-based infrastructure programs. But more important, they can mimic multiple server operations without having the actual hardware to run. Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V can run multiple different operating systems in parallel. This allows users to select what kind of network to run. It can be server 2003 based, server 2008 based or linux based.

OpenStack was a project founded by Rackspace and NASA after both outfits were unable to scale their own infrastructure clouds to a satisfactory level. Moreover, OpenStack has its origins on Nova, a cloud fabric controller designed by NASA, and Cloud Files, which is a storage controller built by Rackspace.
